Macro Monday - Nests of Pine Processionary Caterpillar - Troodos Mountains - Cyprus

Whilst on holiday in Cyprus last week I came across these fascinating tent nests that use pine trees as hosts. Locals told me it is the larva of a poisonous caterpillar and thanks to Wikipedia I have found out it is pine processionary caterpillar and contact with the hairs of the caterpillar can cause an allergic reaction!

I thought it made a good subject for this photography blog.

  2. That IS a perfect and unique subject for Macro. We used to get what were called 'tent caterpillars' on our trees in Oregon -- it was a battle to get rid of them on time.

  3. The photos are interesting because I now realize how ubiquitous these things are. They will kill a tree. I take care of them immediately if I can reach them. Thank you for popping by the other day. You answered the question of where have all the bloggers gone very well!

  5. Interesting. In Finland we have sometimes similar nests on the trees. These springs when they exist, means that in the autumn there is quite a little or none apples. I don't know if those in here are poisonous but anyway they're quite disgusting in my opinion :-D
