Whilst on holiday in Cyprus last week I came across these fascinating tent nests that use pine trees as hosts. Locals told me it is the larva of a poisonous caterpillar and thanks to Wikipedia I have found out it is pine processionary caterpillar and contact with the hairs of the caterpillar can cause an allergic reaction!
I thought it made a good subject for this photography blog.
Joining the Macro Monday Meme today
I have seen these in the trees in the past but did not know they were poisonous.. they are really pretty though
ReplyDeleteThat IS a perfect and unique subject for Macro. We used to get what were called 'tent caterpillars' on our trees in Oregon -- it was a battle to get rid of them on time.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are interesting because I now realize how ubiquitous these things are. They will kill a tree. I take care of them immediately if I can reach them. Thank you for popping by the other day. You answered the question of where have all the bloggers gone very well!
ReplyDeleteI have seen these in trees, had no idea! Very interesting, it's early here and I've learned something new already. Thanks for the beautiful photos............
ReplyDeleteInteresting. In Finland we have sometimes similar nests on the trees. These springs when they exist, means that in the autumn there is quite a little or none apples. I don't know if those in here are poisonous but anyway they're quite disgusting in my opinion :-D
ReplyDeleteInteresting pictures! I love your blog and I'm following you now. You can follow me back if you want! Thanks for visiting me earlier today.
